Performance-Enhancing drugs in Sport

Learning Intentions:

To support your personal perspective with evidence

Success Criteria:
  1. To know the effects of drugs in sport
  2. To understand how it effects the Olympics
"If I could give you a pill that would make you an Olympic champion -- and also kill you in a year -- would you take it?"

(Dr. Gabe Mirkin asked competitive runners that question in advance of a Washington, D.C., road race in 1967. )

Food for thought: Your independent project could sprout from a simple quote, you are interested in or just exploring :)

  1. Read the above quote. Would you take it? Why/Why not?
  2. What is your personal perspective on taking performance-enhancing drugs? Do not discuss yet :)
  3. Now, ask two other people on your table and note down their perspectives, are they different to yours? Why/Why not?

  1. No, since it makes the athlete 'cheat' the sporting event, however it catches up with other cheaters.
  2. My personal perspective on taking performance-enhancing drugs are that it makes the personal
  3. Ismail: I would disagree for a number of reasons. Firstly it is bad for our health and could take a hard effect on the sport we are doing, get sick and fainted or get addicted. It makes athletes cheat and not do the original way of doing the sport, because the drug does it for them. Nazrel: Taking drugs to win is not worth it and drugs always have side effects, it also isn't a good feeling when you win with drugs. Mukhriz: I want to live every year. Everyone wants to. If you take it, a year of you life would be amazing and respected but the rest of the future, it would be a disaster. You would lose all you money for just something you would get famous for. Depression can be made once you get caught and you would be embarrass for not being for not being a natural athlete. Dimas: My personal perspective is that the are some drugs that is not mostly for making you getting stronger or making you die faster, mostly drugs helps you because it increase more energy and can mostly make you crazy later on. Drugs are also medicine so it can be also illegal to take but mostly drugs are not allowed in most countries some drugs can help people like for example steroids can help people that has heart problems or asthma.
Do you think performance-enhancing drugs in sport should be legalised?

No, because it causes harm to oneself and it makes the audience being skeptical why the athlete finish the race fair.

My research article

Male College Students Believe Taking Performance-Enhancing Drugs for Sports Is More Unethical Than Using Stimulants to Improve Grade

ScienceDaily (May 8, 2012) — In the eyes of young college men, it's more unethical to use steroids to get an edge in sports than it is to use prescription stimulants to enhance one's grades, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

I choose this article because, it backs up with my argument, based on the this article and that performance enhancing drugs in sports and academic is cheating and not natural, due to that there is no "try an error".
